Re: Head Tracker Games

That is a great game, it's so beautiful. Might indeed be very interesting to play with a head tracker.
I especially like the movement of the objects and character!

Anyone here able to try it using a head tracker?

Re: Head Tracker Games

wow -- just played a little of it very quickly but it was quite cool to use with my natural point head tracker.

Re: Head Tracker Games

Flow is a lovely trippy little game. Another game that works well with a head tracker is "V-Force", which is down-ward scrolling shoot-em-up. The visual cursor makes such a difference.

http://www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal/g2/v-force.htm

For this game, you'll need an external switch to take care of firing (mapped to the left mouse click). There seems to be a lot of Flash games played in this way.

What would really help would be an auto-fire mode that is constantly on.

Any one aware of any other games with a visual cursor that don't need an extra switch?

Re: Head Tracker Games

I haven't yet to use my own natural point device for many games mostly lack of time from school but I know of its implications and being able to look around the environment while moving forward at the same time using your head to do that is an amazing immersive technique I hope to implement and encourage other designers to use.

Of course I haven't designed any games yet I'm working on it with some friends from GDC scholars including myself this past year perhaps a flash game.  We want to get it rolling but not much success with getting programmers so we might to stick to a flash game.

Once I can get some saved money I will start getting some games designed specifically for this device.  However I just started playing counterstrike from steams engine.  You do have to use particularly for me because I can't use my hands another voice activated program.  I haven't purchased that activated program yet.  It would help tremendously but however I find myself in the environment hard to turn around even though I can turn my head in the first person shooter the mouse gets stuck in the corner and you have to move your head to the right almost like pushing it too far if you know what I mean so you always have to stay centered.  It's definitely doable once I get the voice activation working.

Re: Head Tracker Games

Nice simple example of a usable head-tracker game here called "Dolphin"

http://www.soundscapes.dk/dolphin.htm

On screen pointer helps you guide the dolphin about. Staggered levels gives you a chance to rest your neck.

Dwell clicked START button gets rid of the need for any extra controls.

Re: Head Tracker Games

The Retro Remakes 2006 Accessibility Competition has seen some new head-tracker accessible games released. Please let us know what you think.

If you find them too slow, you may find that a utility such as CPU Killer (from www.cpukiller.com) may help.

ARCHIAST (Tesa & Michi) (Winner of my Spot Prize for Accessibility)

Superbly designed game that works beautifully with head trackers and dwell clicking too. Takes a little time to get used to the wealth of options, but well worth sticking with.

CHRONOS - A TAPESTRY OF TIME (Kryten) (9th place in competition)

Highly head-tracker compatible retro shoot-em-up. Play this with a dwell-clicker thanks to auto-firing.

http://www.kryten2x4b.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/chronos.zip - Latest Download

CLOCKWISER (Ishisoft) (2nd Place in competition)

Puzzle game with some lovely accessibility options. Good with head-trackers.

DEMON ATTACK (Ishisoft) (2nd Place in competition)

Simple shoot-em-up that works beautifully with a head-tracker (make sure that fire is set to auto-fire). Even includes a head-tracker accessible pause mode so players can rest their necks.

KORONIS RIFT (Endurion) (16th in competition)

3D exploration game. Compatible with a dwell clicker. Easier with a switch. Game play is a bit flat.

http://www.remakes.org/comp2006/screenshots.php?page=7 - Download

THE PYRAMID (PugFugly Games) (WINNER!)

Absolutely the most accessible game written to date. Works great with a head-tracker (with your XP fix), single switch play, joystick or keyboard. Has options to magnify the screen, slow the game down and so on. Head tracker gamers can pause the game at any point, and have a doodle whilst they rest their necks. Brilliant Robotron hectic like gameplay.

SHOOTING GALLERY (63rd in competition)

Unfinished and very basic, but works pretty well even with dwell clicking. Really needs more game play options and sound. Trap shooting is much too hard, but the other games playable.

STAR WARS (Minionsoft) (3rd in competition)

http://www.minionsoft.com/starwars/starwars.htm - Latest download and screenshots
Features some dwell clicking, but if you dwell click to get to the game, you'll have problems firing. I am in contact with the programmer, and hopefully I can pester into making this the brilliant head-tracker game it so nearly is. Needs a head-tracker exit option.

WINGS OF FURY (Florian Faust) (23rd in competition)

http://www.remakes.org/comp2006/screenshots.php?page=3 - Download
Difficult plane game, with interesting attempt at on-screen quadrant mapped controls. Not my cup of tea but may appeal to some.

Some other notables for head-tracker usage, with reviews here: http://retroremakes.com/comp2006/results.php (and the author's e-mails embedded in the image names if you wish to contact them).

BOMBZUKA (needs a switch)
http://www.remakes.org/comp2006/screenshots.php?page=3
Tough puzzle game.

VENTURE INTO ADVENTURE (needs a switch)
http://www.remakes.org/comp2006/screenshots.php?page=3
Okay remake of an ancient Berzerk inspired arcade game.

FROGGY RIBBIT (TRACK MAPPER only)
http://www.remakes.org/comp2006/screenshots.php?page=1
Plays very well with UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT mapped out. Doesn't play well taking over the mouse controls implemented in this game.

TRAFFIC 2006
http://www.remakes.org/comp2006/screenshots.php?page=7
Map UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT and something for SPACE

CITY DEFENCE (Justin Reid) - NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED AS REQUIRES ESCAPE TO QUIT
http://www.remakes.org/comp2006/screenshots.php?page=2
A pretty basic Missile Command game. It needs a quit, pause and nuke on-screen option to make this game fully head-tracker compatible. Works pretty well otherwise, and gives the option to pause between levels, so players can rest their necks. Playable with Dwell Clicking. Can't quit though.

Re: Head Tracker Games

Ah forgot one....

"Endurance Kaboom" by Allan Park

Works very well with a head-tracker with it's own dwell clicking for starting and quitting the game. Very simple, but demonstrates a head-tracker game very quickly.

Needs a dwell clicker to start the game - but the rest is by head-tracker / mouse alone. Thanks to Geoff Harbach for passing this on.

Echoes can be played with a head-tracker alone with auto-fire on. You'll need to adjust the game controls configuration to all MOUSE.

Xeno Tactic is a very nice head-tracker compatible game. It runs in a window so should be compatible with most dwell clickers if you can't activate a mouse button in a more traditional way. Review here:

Re: Head Tracker Games

Hello, I've made a version of PacMan that can be played using just the mouse pointer.

The game menus can all be controlled using just the pointer and include options to vary the number of enemies and alter the speed of gameplay. I'm hoping this game will be compatible with Head / Eye Tracker equipment.

Here's the link to get the game:

wx3 .graemesfreegames.com/html/maze_muncher_-_tracker.html

It's completely free to download and play. :)

Re: Head Tracker Games

Version 1.1 of Maze Muncher is now up on my site for downloading.

I wasn't happy with the control system so I've hopefully improved it and made it much easier to play.

I've also increased the size of the in-game dwell-click quit button and added a pause function too.

Get it here: wx3 .graemesfreegames.com/html/maze_muncher_-_tracker.html

Edit: version 1.2 now - automatic loading and saving game preferences - no more need to keep having to go to the options to set your speeds everytime you want to play.
