Topic: Gizmos, Gadgets and software I use

Hey all.  New to the forum but not new to the trials and tribulations of 1 handed gaming.  I lost the use of my right arm 13 years ago to a motorbike smash.  I thought it might be useful to some if I post a list of stuff I use to play games on my PC.

Logitech G15 Keyboard - This is a great keyboard with 18 (3 modes so really 54) programmable buttons, they can do anything from a single key press to a timed macro function.  This can also be useful for normal applications.  The keyboard will recognise what program you are running at the time (even by alt + tab) and load the profile you have set for that program.

Microsoft Intellipoint 5 button mouse - Standard cheap mouse with 2 side buttons.  I use this in conjunction with the intellipoint software so that the 2 side buttons are configurable.  For example in a FPS game the 2 side buttons are my strafe left and right.   Again, the software can recognise the program you are running and auto load a saved profile for that application.

I went through a stage where I was into a flight sim called IL2 pacific fighters.  For this I used a saitek cyborg evo joystick in conjunction with TrackIR and a neat little bit of voice recognition software called VAC.  VAC can be used for many many useful things but I just programmed it so that when I said things like "gear up" it raised my landing gear saving me from taking my hand off the joystick and pressing g on the keyboard.  Really you could pretty much fly the whole plane by voice if you wanted but you wouldn't be very competitive.
VAC can be found by visiting http://www.dwvac.com/
TrackIR at http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/

I also have a PS2 to PC converter which I use for the likes of FIFA.

If you have any questions about my configurations or experiences then please don't hesitate to ask.

Glad to have found this site .... its comforting to know that "you are not on your own"

All the best,
Dave

Re: Gizmos, Gadgets and software I use

What do you think about the  TrackIR. I had one & got annoied with it & sent it back. How do you push the buttons on the keyboard when you have the mouse in your left hand. Could you explain in detail for me.

Thanks so much.

Re: Gizmos, Gadgets and software I use

I found the TrackIR great for my flying games but can't say I'd use it for much else other than looking around.

As far as using my mouse and keyboard at the same time ...

My mouse is on the left of my keyboard.  Due to my keyboard having the programmable keys on the left hand side I simply extend my thumb from my mouse to hit the button I want to use.  As an example if you look at the picture of my keyboard I use the 2 buttons bottom left as my duck/prone and stand keys...

If a picture would help illustrate this then let me know!

Re: Gizmos, Gadgets and software I use

Hey daveyboy....having a hard time deciding on what mouse to buy. I have absolutely no use of my left hand and arm and i am desperately searching for the 'right mouse' or een a joystick that can be mapped as a mouse. I am into COD4, always was and i need a mouse or something for which i only need one hand.
What do you think of:
1. Saitek Cyborg mouse (with hat-switch so i can run and strafe)
2. Microsoft Sidewinder X8 - 7 programmable buttons
3. Any joystick with hat-switch

Please help me out.
