Topic: Bad sound crackling with Vista

I'm running vista 32-bit on a gateway notebook with one gig of ram and an onboard AC97 sound controler.  Currently I am using a USB headset for sound output.  Whenever I launch AGM, the sound is extremely distorted and constantly crackles.  I have fiddled with higher values for soundbuf, from 0 to thirty without any improvement.  This issue is not rectified by removing the USB headset.

I have the same cracking sound on one computer.
AGM works on 2 out of three computers.

I am having the same general audio problem not just with agm but all audio. loud crackling distorted hissing sounds any time there is any audio playing with any program.
