In the latest installation of the ever-popular Pokemon series, Pokemon sword and Pokemon shield, you visit the Galar region. The region is based on the UK and has so much inspiration from its culture. So large green fields with sheep and the occasional regional snake will not be uncommon in the Galar region. Something else unique to the Galar region is the challenge for the gym.
Gym challenge? You can ask. Well, it’s actually the newest version of the good old gym system where you go around and collect 8 badges to participate in the Pokemon competition. Well, in the Galar region it is a seasonal thing similar to that or a sport. The comparison does not stop there, because gyms have become huge stadiums where you have to dive in front of a huge crowd. Even the elite 4 has been removed and replaced by a knockout tournament where the winner can challenge the champion of the region.
It’s good that the stadiums are so big, because you need the space for the sword and shield the new phenomenon, dynamaxing!
When you dynamaxize your Pokemon, it becomes huge and has access to special maximum movements for 3 turns. Oh and before you ask it, dynamaxing only affects the Pokemons max HP and no other stat. The maximum movements are super powerful and have an extra effect, such as setting up a sandstorm.
Some Pokemon may just as well use gigantamax, which also changes the appearance of the Pokemon except that they become huge. These gigantamax Pokemon all have a special move or their own called a gigantamax (g-max) move that works the same as a max move, but are simply unique compared to other moves.
Another big feature is the wild area, a huge open area in the middle of the region where you can find wild Pokemon running around. In this area you can also go on max raids where you and three other trainers can be confronted with a strong dynamax Pokemon. If you manage to solve the raid battle, you will get the chance to catch the Pokemon and you will always get many useful items. There are of course more smaller changes, but I leave something for you to explore yourself. I am sure you will meet them all in your adventure through the Galar region.
